One question we hear constantly: “Which firewall vendor should we standardise on?” And the answer, frustratingly, is “it depends.” But after deploying and managing thousands of firewalls across every major vendor, we can give you a framework to make the right call.
Strengths: Fortinet wins on raw performance per rupee. Their custom ASIC architecture means you get more throughput at a lower price point than any competitor. FortiOS is mature, feature-rich, and the Security Fabric ecosystem ties firewall, switching, wireless, and endpoint together seamlessly.
Best for: Organisations that want maximum security features per rupee, are willing to invest in Fortinet-specific training, or want a single-vendor network security fabric.
Considerations: FortiOS has a learning curve if your team comes from Cisco or Palo Alto. The ecosystem works best when you go all-in — mixing vendors reduces the advantage.
Strengths: If you’re already a Cisco shop, the integration advantage is real. Cisco Secure Firewall (formerly Firepower) integrates with ISE, Stealthwatch, and the broader Cisco network portfolio. The management paradigm is familiar to any Cisco engineer.
Best for: Organisations with deep Cisco expertise, existing Cisco infrastructure, or compliance requirements that favour a single-vendor Cisco stack.
Considerations: Cisco’s threat protection throughput has historically lagged behind Fortinet at similar price points. Licensing can be complex and expensive. The firewall line has gone through multiple architecture changes (ASA → Firepower → Secure Firewall), which has created upgrade fatigue for some customers.
Strengths: Palo Alto’s Single Pass architecture and Precision AI deliver excellent threat detection. Panorama is widely considered the best multi-firewall management platform. Their threat research (Unit 42) is world-class.
Best for: Organisations where security is the primary driver and budget is secondary. Enterprises with mature security teams who can leverage advanced features.
Considerations: Palo Alto commands a significant price premium — typically 30-50% more than Fortinet for comparable throughput. Licensing complexity is high, with multiple subscription tiers.
Strong in the SMB and mid-market segment, particularly for organisations that want simplicity over advanced features. Sophos Central provides good central management. Best for organisations with 1-3 sites and limited security team bandwidth.
Enterprise-grade security with a long history. Their SandBlast zero-day protection and Infinity architecture are strong. However, market share has declined and the management interface shows its age compared to newer competitors.
Both serve the SMB market well. Good entry-level options for small businesses. Limited advanced features compared to the big three. Best for price-sensitive SMBs with basic security needs.
